Bill introduced to legalize medical marijuana in Wisconsin

TODAY, AND AS 12 NEWS’ KENT
WAINSCOTT REPORTS, THERE’S
SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT ABOUT
THIS BILL.>>WITH PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR
LEGALIZED MEDICAL MARIJUANA ON
THE RISE, SOME STATE LAWMAKERS
THINK THE TIME IS RIGHT. THEY’VE INTRODUCED A NEW BILL,
WHICH HAS THE SUPPORT OF THE
GOVERNOR.>>THE PEOPLE OF WISCONSIN HAVE
CONSISTENTLY SUPPORTED THAT
THROUGH REFERENDA, SO I THINK
IT’S A GREAT IDEA.>>EVERS TRIED TO LEGALIZE
MEDICAL POT IN THIS STATE
BUDGET, BUT THE ITEM WAS TOSSED
OUT. AND SOME OTHER DEMOCRATICS HAVE
EVEN TRIED TO PASS FULL
LEGALIZATION, AS RECENTLY AS
LAST SPRING, WITH NO SUCCESS
>>THE MOST DANGEROUS THING
ABOUT MARIJUANA IN WISCONSIN IS THAT IT IS ILLEGAL.>>BUT THIS BILL HAS A DISTINCT
DIFFERENCE, A REPUBLICAN AUTHOR.>>I THINK PUBLIC OPINION HAS
CHANGED DRASTICALLY ON THIS
ISSUE OVER THE YEARS. PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR
ALTERNATIVES TO THINGS LIKE
OPIOIDS.>>SENATOR PATRICK TESTIN OF
STEVENS POINT JOINS TWO
DEMOCRATS IN INTRODUCING THE
ILL TO LEGALIZE MEDICAL
CANNABIS AND SAYS HE HAS A
PERSONAL REASON.>>MY GRANDFATHER, WHO DIED BACK
IN 2000, HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH
BOTH LOVING A — BOTH LUNG AND
BONE CANCER, AND HE HAD TO GO
OUTSIDE THE LAW TO GET THE ONLY
THING THAT GAVE HIM HIS APPETITE BACK, AND COULD KEEP HIS FOOD
DOWN, AND THAT WAS CANNABIS.>>BUT TESTIN SAYS HE KNOWS THE
BILL HAS A TOUGH CLIMB. DO YOU THINK THERE’S ENOUGH
SUPPORT AMONG YOUR REPUBLICAN
COLLEAGUES TO GET THIS PASSED?>>I DON’T THINK IT’S THERE AT
THIS TIME. WHILE GOVERNOR EVERS IS HOPING
PUBLIC OPINION WILL PERSUADE
LAWMAKERS TO PASS THE BILL.>>HAVING A BI-PARTISAN BILL IS
IMPORTANT, OBVIOUSLY. BUT IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAT WE
GET IT DONE.>>KENT, THE GOVERNOR MENTIONED
PUBLIC SUPPORT. WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?>>IN ADVISORY REFERENDA LAST
FALL, VOTERS IN 16 WISCONSIN
COUNTIES OVERWHELMINGLY
SUPPORTED LEGALIZING MEDICAL
MARIJUANA. AND THE MARQUETTE POLL’S MOST
RECENT SURVEY ON THE QUESTION

  1. As someone who has chronic pain from a disease and gets no relief threw medicine. I would want to try to get my pain under control without the many side effects I currently have.
