Bret Easton Ellis: Victimization and identity politics are intertwined

♪>>Martha: 2020 DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE PETE BUTTIGIEG GOING AFTER PRESIDENT TRUMP FOR EXPLOITING IDENTITY POLITICS. LISTEN.>>I WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON ONE OF THE BUZZ WORDS OF OUR TIME SO-CALLED IDENTITY POLITICS. MANY OF THE OBJECTIONS COME FROM THE RIGHT, WHICH IS IRONIC AT THIS TIME BECAUSE THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION HAS MASTERED THE PRACTICE OF THE MOST DIVISIVE FORM OF SUCH POLITICS PEAK WHITE IDENTITY POLITICS DESIGNED TO DRIVE APART PEOPLE OF COMMON INTERESTS. WE HAVE A CRISIS OF BELONGING IN THIS COUNTRY.>>Martha: THAT TOUCHES ON ONE OF THE MANY TOPICS BAD BOY AUTHOR BRET EASTON ELLIS CALLED WHITE AT WHICH HE TAKES AIM AT QUOTE RELENTLESS ANTI-TRUMP CORPORATE ELITES, CORPORATE CENSORSHIP, HOLLYWOOD IDENTITY POLITICS GENERATION WUSS WOKE CULTURE WATCHDOGS THE OBFUSCATION OF IDEALS ONCE BOTH CHERISHED AND CLEAR. YOU HERE TO TALK ABOUT WHY THIS BOOK IS GETTING A LOT OF PRAISE AND BACKLASH WHICH IS THE WAY HE LIKES IT AND THE COMMENTS FROM BRENDA PETE BT THE GENTLEMEN OF THE JURY. HE HAS TALKED A LOT ABOUT WHITE PRIVILEGE AND HOW HE HAS ACCEPTED THE IDEA THAT THAT IS PART OF WHO HE IS. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THAT?>>WELL, I THINK IDENTITY POLITICS OF ANY KIND IS A BAD IDEA. BUT I DO THINK THERE IS SOMETHING VERY INTERESTING ABOUT PETE BUTTIGIEG THAT HE HASN’T TALKED ABOUT IS THAT HIS MOST PROGRESSIVE MESSAGE THAT HE IS SENDING OUT THERE IS IS HOW MAINSTREAM AND TRADITIONAL IS HE FOR A QUOTE UNQUOTE GAY CANDIDATE. I DON’T LIKE TO SOLELY TALK ABOUT REPRESENTATION BUT THERE IS SOMETHING QUITE RADICAL ABOUT THE WAY PETE BUTTIGIEG PRESENTS HIMSELF THAT IS NOT THE NORM IN A PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN OR IN POLITICS. SO I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THAT THAT IS INTERESTING ABOUT HIM. OTHERWISE, WHITE PRIVILEGE.>>Martha: HE TALKS A LOT ABOUT THE FACT THAT HE IS MIDWESTERN AND WAS IN THE ARMED SERVICES. THAT HE IS A RELIGIOUS MAN AND IT IS A VERY INTERESTING DICHOTOMY IN TERMS OF THE PERSON THAT HE IS. AND I THINK HE IS GETTING A TON OF ATTENTION FOR THAT AS WELL. TALK TO ME ABOUT SELF-VICTIMIZATION BECAUSE YOU GO ON IN HERE ABOUT IF YOU ARE A CAUCASIAN ADULT WHO CAN’T READ SHAKESPEARE OR MELVILLE OR TONY MORRISON BECAUSE IT MIGHT TRIGGER SOMETHING HARMFUL OR SUCH TEXT DAMAGE YOUR HOPE TO DEFINE YOURSELF THROUGH YOUR VICTIMIZATION YOU SHOULD SEE A DOCTOR. [LAUGHTER]>>WELL, I THINK VICTIMIZATION AND IDENTITY POLITICS ARE INTERTWINED AND THEY CAME TOGETHER DURING A PARTICULAR ERA IN THE LAST 10 YEARS AND WHAT HAPPENED WAS IDENTITY POLITICS LED STRAIGHT INTO VICTIMIZATION A GROUP THAT FELT MARGINALIZED OR HAD SOME KIND OF GRIEVANCES SUDDENLY USED THOSE GRIEVANCES TO THEIR ADVANTAGE AND STARTED TO VICTIMIZE THEMSELVES BECAUSE OF THAT THEY GOT A LOT OF ATTENTION. SO THAT WAS THE CONNECTION THAT I WAS MAKING IN THE BOOK.>>Martha: AND THEN THEY LIKE IT AND IT FEEDS ON ITS SUFFICIENTLY AND THEN OTHER PEOPLE ALSO WANT TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SEEN AS VICTIMS. CORRECT?>>YES. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS. AND IT’S KIND OF THIS NEVER ENDING LOOP THAT ULTIMATELY REDEFINING YOURSELF BY A BAD THING. IF YOU ARE DEFINING YOURSELF TO TRAUMA THAT HAPPENED YEARS AGO AND STILL DEFINING YOURSELF IN THAT YOU ARE IN A WAY ILL AND YOU NEED TO PROCESS THAT TO MOVE ON IN SOCIETY. BUT TO DEFINE YOURSELF BY A BAD THING, A TRAUMA, THAT SOMETHING THAT TURNS YOU INTO A VICTIM IS NOT REALLY HELPING ANYBODY AND CERTAINLY NOT HELPING YOURSELF.>>Martha: WE HAVE BEEN DOING A LOT OF INTERVIEWS WITH WORLD WAR II VETERANS AND THE BUILD UP TO THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY. IT STRIKES ME THERE IS SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT MAKES THESE GUYS TICK AND WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. THEY ARE ALL ABOUT, YOU KNOW, GETTING UP AND NOT TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEY WERE INJURED. NOT TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT, YOU KNOW, THAT IT WAS THEM, THAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE OTHER PEOPLE THAT THEY WERE WITH SUCH MY LITTLE. COMPLETELY OPPOSITE OF THE YOU WILL INDIVIDUALIZED SOCIETY WE LIVE IN TODAY.>>ALSO I WAS WRITING A LOT OF WHITE DURING THE CAMPUS PROTEST OF CONSERVATIVE SPEAKERS. AND I WAS AMAZED WHEN I SAW 18, 19, 20-YEAR-OLD MEN WHO HAVE TO GO INTO SAFE SPACES WITH A PET DOG AND BALLOONS AND CUPCAKES IN ORDER TO, YOU KNOW, IN ORDER TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES. AND THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT MY GRANDFATHER WHO WAS ON THE SHORES OF NORMANDY AND I THOUGHT WHAT IS GOING ON? A LOT OF WHITE CAME FROM THOSE OBSERVATIONS.

  1. There is no such thing as 'identity politics'. It's just a ruse for the protection of failed arguements. The only time I hear the word 'Victimization ' is when spewed ad nauseam on FOX and crybaby conservatives rushing for cover from the truth. Try harder morons! Lol

  2. Leftist liberals using identity politics to call oit Trump for loving his country… thats rich. Leftist liberals are delusional instigating cunts, especially the White ones.

  3. Well… I have new respect for Bret Easton Ellis. Yeah! It's okay to be a white COLORED person.

  4. Brett Easton Ellis defined the problem of excess for my generation. Less Than Zero. Took the book to film with Robert Downey Jr. Glad you're piping up Brett.

  5. Gen Wuss 🤔😁 💪💪🏻💪🏽💪🏿🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

  6. Victimization and identity politics is the religion of the far left that has taken over the Democrat Party. It is broadly rejected though by the American public, and it will show in the upcoming election.

  7. There is no freaking way the Dems can turn identity politics on conservatives. You made your bed.

  8. Poor Bret, what a Freudian slip,"POOP Buttigeid" LMAO
    🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

  9. Identity Politics and Victimization are strategies used by the left to cry and whine like spoiled rotten kids.

  10. How hypocritical. Says Trump uses identity politics by promoting it when he uses his homosexuality to pander for votes.

  11. If someone complains about how they are oppressed in a bragging manner then just counter them with congratulations instead of correcting what was wrong with their logic 🤷‍♂️

  12. It's HILARIOUS that conservatives don't see they are mastering the method of victimization and identity politics. They bloody started it in the seventies, and have only ramped it up from there.

  13. Maybe Woke America sees clearly where the countryis headed, and Its Values we need to get BACK
All the Sexualization,AntiSemitism, Racism, Hatred Is In The Heart
But To Attack Americans Whom are Patriotic Is All Occurring because of Constant Attacks on Us, we need to change Our Culture, Values and Laws?

  14. Bret Easton Ellis is an awesome writer and an incisive observer of society. A lot of us wonder “what is going on” on a daily if not hourly basis.

  15. Identity politics and victimization is showing the lawless, immoral and murderous works humans committed. And this is watched in Roman Amphitheater of Gladiator war games. Or it's game of thrones popular selling?

Indeed what's what will be Judged.
    Who's what will be prosecuted.

  16. Peter Inmybutt would have loved Nazism: it brought people with '"common interests" together…bigly.

  17. DEMOCRATS ON MONDAY: "Diversity and difference are great!"

DEMOCRATS ON TUESDAY: "Republicans with different and diverse ideas are terrible!"

  18. Just because certain generations have to fight on beaches and others live in peace does not make either one better or worse. BEE and Martha MacCullum seem to be operating in the fallacy that there is an objective idea of what victimisation is. Is our society meant to structure around the horrific violence of WWII? It's such a lame line of argument that just papers over their contempt for a culture they can't independently work out themselves in private. I actually find BEE quite entertaining to listen to etc, etc, but he just sounds whiney and incredibly short-sighted on these issues. I genuinely think he wrote this book to wind up his millennial boyfriend.

  19. "Mayor Pete" effectively just said that all White people should vote for Trump because Trump is all about White people. Seeing as how 78% of Americans identify as White, if a majority of them vote for Trump, Trump wins again! lol But, of course, "Mayor Pete" is completely full of sh*t.

  20. Pete Buttigieg is the great white hope of the degenerate overclass as we can see by the ComCorp media pressure to promote him. Our world culture is under a relentless assault by these creatures who don't even believe they are human. They really believe they are a separate class or even species. Such is their madness. They forgot about the OTHER 'species' that threatened human survival. Like the Dire Wolf, Cave Bear, and other extinct species…

  22. I really wonder how petty and distracted we have become. Fukushima has poisoned the Pacific Ocean and it is dying.
No big deal like the Gulf of Mexico…brothers and sisters, we should repent and pray to God for mercy.

  23. Pete Buttigieg, the last great hope for the degenerate overclass. Notice how hard he is being 'pumped' by the ComCorp media.

  24. So Pete talks about white nationalism being an issue, so you bring on an author of a white-victimhood book? That's like proving his point…

  25. When Buttigiege talks, you can really hear what a condescending, smug A**hole he is. I dont want creeps like Buttigiege telling ME what's best. No, just no.

  26. Donald J. Trump is a draft dodging, adulterous, narcissistic sociopathic pathological liar, lifelong con man and Putin sympathizer, who denigrates American war heroes, insults our allies and is unfit for the Presidency. Pete Buttigieg For America 2020! Freedom, Security, Democracy!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

  27. Pete is motivating the idea of getting beyond victimization and identity politics in order to see our commonalities. I'm glad to see some (weird) acknowledgement of that at least.

  28. Dems worship victims because they think  victimization is martyrdom.   Problem is… martyrs are chosen, they are called to their sacrifice.   Youre not a martyr if you nail yourself to the cross, youre just a pathetic loser in need of attention.

  29. Well I reject the premise, but Democrats once had the unions and outside of that they don't have much, I don't know think civil rights supersede state rights.

  30. I really liked Bret Easton Ellis as a teenager and into my early 20s. Kind of lost track of his writing after Lunar Park. Seeing this is disappointing but not entirely unpredictable.

  31. I'm reading White right now and it is right on the money.

BTW the Dems always cast the finger at the Republicans but always stop short of providing any real examples not taken out of context.

  32. Victimization and identity politics go hand and hand because this is all covert Marxism. It's based on the same dynamic of the oppressor and the oppressed. What we need is Diversity of thought and freedom of speech. People shouldn't use their race and gender as a weapon and a shield against others.
