Drexel Political Science Professor Bill Rosenberg Offers Reaction To 2018 Midterm Elections

DEMOCRATIC LEADER NANCY PELL LOWS TOY EXTEND HIS CONGRATULATIONS. NOW THAT TELLS CONTROL HOUSE WHAT DOES THAT MEAN MOVING FORWARD. BILL ROSENBERG IS POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR AT DREXEL UNIVERSITY AND YENS IS LIVE FROM THE CBS-3 NEWS CENTER. BILL, THANKS FOR BEING WITH US GOOD MORNING. HOW DOES THIS EFFECT THE PRESIDENT’S AGENDA. WELL, FIRST OF ALL I WOULD SAY IN THIS ELECTION THERE WAS A VICTORY EITHER WAY FOR DONALD TRUMP IF THE HOUSE WENT DEMOCRATIC HE WOULD BE ABLE TO SAY OVER NEXT TWO YEARS EVERYTHING THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN FOR HIS AGENDA WAS THE FAULT OF THE DEMOCRATS, AND IF HE WOULD HAVE WON THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HE WOULD CLAIM SORT OF THE MANDATE FOR EVERYTHING THAT HE HAS DONE. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING TO RIGHT NOW IS ALL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN SHIPS AND SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIRMAN SHIPS OF THE HOUSE ARE GOING TO BE DEMOCRATIC. SO THEY WILL HAVE SUBPOENA POWER AND DO INVESTIGATIONS BUT THEY HAVE TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER REACH. WE ARE HEARING NANCY PELOSI ‘S NAME A LOT AGAIN, WHAT MOVES DO YOU ANTICIPATE DEMOCRATS MILKING NEW THAT THEY CONTROL THE HOUSE. THEY HAVE TO BE CAREFUL IF THEY GO AFTER THE PRESIDENT DO YOU THINK THEY WILL OR WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN NOW. I THINK THE DEMOCRATS IN PARTICULAR HAVE AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF DIFFERENCE TO THE FACT THAT THEY WANTED TO STAY ON MESSAGE FOR THIS ELECTION. YOU HEARD IN DISCUSSION AT ALL BY DEMOCRATS ABOUT IMPEACHMENT THEY DON’T WANT THE ELECTION TO BE A REFERENDUM ON SHOULD WE IMPEACH DONALD TRUMP. THE DEMOCRATS WERE DEALING WITH ISSUES ABOUT HEALTH CARE AND ABOUT OTHER ISSUES, AND RECOGNIZING THAT THE ECONOMY GENERALLY IS DOING PRETTY WELL THEY ARE GOING TO BE IN A SITUATION WHERE THEY WILL WANT TO TAKE THE POSITION OF BEING THE RESPONSIBLE ADULTS IN THE ROOM RATHER THAN BEING THE ATTACKERS. BILL WHAT ARE THE RESULTS TELL US ABOUT HOW THE AVERAGE AMERICAN IS FEELING? DID THEY VET FOR CANDIDATES OR DID THEY VET FOR OR AGAINST THE PRESIDENT. I THINK WE HAVE TWO THINGS TO CONSIDER. ONE IS THE FACT IF YOU LOOKED AT COVERAGE LAST NIGHT WHICH I WAS VERY A TUNE TO, THE COVERAGE WAS ALL ABOUT IT DID DEMOCRAT TAKE A SEAT ARE LOSE THE SEAT. IT WAS ALL PARTISAN SHIP. VERY LITTLE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE SPECIFIC ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN. SO WHAT WE’RE REALLY LOOKING AT NEW IS THE PEOPLE THAT DID GET ELECT HOW WILL THEY APPROACH THE SHALL YOUS IN BET HOUSE AND SENATE AS WELL AS GOVERNORSHIPS. WITHIN OF THE BIG STORIES YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IS FACT THAT PENNSYLVANIA, MICHIGAN AND ONE CONN SIN WHICH WERE SURPRISE STATES FOR DONALD TRUMP HAVE ELECT STATEWIDE, DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS. SO THAT LEAVES SORT OF A PATH FOR DEMOCRATS IN THE 2020 ELECTION. LETS STICK WITH THAT PINT FOR A MOMENT. THERE WERE A LOT OF GOVERNOR- SHIPS POSITIONS OPENED, I THINK 36 OFFER LESS THAN THAT BUT QUITE A FEW AND THEY SEEMED TO PICK UP QUIT A FEW SEATS. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? IT IS IN THE NECESSARILY CONGRESS BUT THE ROLE OF GUTCHER-SHIPS DOES PLAY A PERFECT ROLE, TALK ABOUT THAT QUICKLY. WE ARE COMING IN A PERIOD WHERE NEXT RHEA PORTION. PROCESS WILL TAKE PLACE, THE BOUND DRY LINES FOR CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS AND THAT REALLY SET UP WHO IS LIKELY TO WIN A CONGRESSIONAL SEAT DEPENDING UPON THE BOUND DRY LINE. THAT IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT. SECOND OF ALL WE HAVE TO RECOGNIZE THAT TWO OF THE BIGGEST DEFEAT YESTERDAY WERE AFRICAN-AMERICAN DEMOCRATS RUNNING FOR GOVERNORS IN BOATMAN FLORIDA. VERY CLOSE RACES, BUT THEY CAME UP SHORT. WELL, THANKS BILL WE APPRECIATE BILL ROSENBERG FROM DREXEL UNIVERSITY. INSIGHT THIS MORNING. THANK YOU. OUR CAMPAIGN 2018 COVERAGE CONTINUES ON LINE AT CBS PHILLY.COM. FINE ALL OF THE RESULTS AND COMPLETE COVERAGE ON THE MIDTERM ELECTIONS. ALSO CBS THIS MORNING IS OFFERING EXTENDED COVERAGE OF CAMPAIGN 2018 THE SHOW WILL BE
