Someone was a communist – Qualcuno era comunista | Giorgio Gaber (English subtitles)

Someone was a communist because they were born in Emilia Someone was a communist because their grandfather, uncle, dad… mom wasn’t. Someone was a communist because they saw Russia as a promise China as a poem, communism as heaven on earth. Someone was a communist because they felt alone. Someone was a communist because their education had been too Catholic. Someone was a communist because the cinema demanded it, theater demanded it, painting demanded it, literature too… Everything demanded it. Someone was a communist because
“History is on our side!” Someone was a communist because they had told
them to. Someone was a communist because they hadn’t
told them everything. Someone was a communist because they once,
before before, were a fascist. Someone was a communist because they had
understood that Russia went slowly, but far. Someone was a communist
because Berlinguer was a good person. Someone was a communist
because Andreotti wasn’t a good person. Someone was a communist because they were rich but loved the people. Someone was a communist because they drank wine
and were moved to tears at working-class rallies. Someone was a communist because they were
so atheist that they needed another God. Someone was a communist because they were
so much fascinated by blue-collar workers, that they wanted to be one of them. Someone was a communist because they had had
enough of being a blue-collar worker. Someone was a communist because they wanted a wage rise. Someone was a communist because the revolution,
not today. Could be tomorrow. But the day after that, definitely! Someone was a communist because ‘the bourgeoisie
the proletariat the class struggle, fuck.’ Someone was a communist to piss off their father. Someone was a communist because the only tv
channel they watched was Rai 3. Someone was a communist for a fad, someone for principle, someone due to frustration. Someone was a communist because they wanted
to nationalize everything. damn Someone was a communist because they didn’t know
any state employees, civil servants and the likes. Someone was a communist because they had confused
dialectical materialism for the gospel according to Lenin. Someone was a communist because they were
sure the working class was behind them. Someone was a communist because they were
more communist than anybody else. Someone was a communist because there was
the great Communist Party, Someone was a communist in spite of the great Party. Someone was a communist because there wasn’t anything better. Someone was a communist because we had the
worst socialist party of Europe. Someone was a communist because a government
worse than ours, only in Uganda. Someone was a communist because they were sick and tired
of forty years of Christian Democrat governments, incompetents and colluded with the mafia. Someone was a communist because of Piazza
Fontana(bombing-fascist terrorist attack), Brescia(bombing-fascist terrorist attack),
Bologna train station(bombing-fascist terrorist attack), Italicus(bombing-fascist terrorist attack), Ustica (plane crash-unknown) and so on, and so on, and so on. Someone was a communist because any opposer
was a communist. Someone was a communist because they couldn’t
stand anymore that dirty thing that we insist on calling democracy. Someone Someone believed they were a communist, but
they were maybe something else. Someone was a communist because they dreamed
of a different freedom from the American one. Someone was a communist because they believed they could be alive and happy, only if others were too. Someone was a communist because they needed
a push towards something new. Because they were willing to change every day, because they felt the necessity of a different morality. Because maybe… it was just a force, a flight, a dream, it was only a spark, a desire to change things, to change life. Yes, someone was a communist because with this spark at their side, everyone was like, more than themselves. It was like two people in one. On one side the personal daily toil, and on the other the sense of belonging to a race, which wanted to lift-off in flight, to truly change life. No, no regrets. Perhaps even then many had opened their wings, without being able to fly, like hypothetical seagulls. And now? Even now, we feel as if we are in two. On one side, the integrated person that obsequiously goes through the squalor of their own daily survival, and on the other, the seagull without even the intention of flying, because by now the dream has been crippled. Two miseries in only one body.
