If you don’t know about him then, it is very important for you to watch this video. President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Sunil Arora, who was one of our Election Commissioners, as the Chief Election Commissioner. He will take over the responsibilities from 2nd December 2018 Our current Chief Election Commissioner is Mr. Om Prakash Rawat, who will be retiring on 1st December 2018. Om Prakash Rawat, in 2009, received the recognition of forest rights award. Mr. Sunil Arora will be now succeeding him. Sunil Arora is an IAS Officer from the Rajasthan’s 1980 Cadre. He had recently been appointed as an Election Commissioner. Sunil Arora has also been the Secretary of Ministry of Information Broadcasting and the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship. He has also served in the Finance Ministry, Planning Commission and Textile Ministry. He was also the Joint Secretary of Ministry of Civil Aviation. Now, lets know about the Roles & Responsibilities of a Chief Election Commission. The Election Commission is a Constitutional Body. The Article 324 of the Indian Constitution states the provisions for the roles & responsibilities of the Election Commission. It the Election Commission that conducts free & fair elections in the country. Other than the Chief Election Commissioner, there are two Election Commissioners, who are also appointed by the President. Sunil Arora, who will soon be the Chief Election Commissioner, and Ashok Lavasa are our current Election Commissioners. The tenure of Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioners is of 6 years. Their retirement age is of 65 years. If any Chief Election Commissioner is supposed to be impeached/removed then, it can be done through Presidential Resolution. But this requires the Special Majority of both the Parliamentary Houses. The Election Commission conducts Elections for the Parliament, State Legislature and the offices of President & vice-President. The Election Commission advises the President in matters related to the disqualification of a member of the parliament. Another Important thing is that, It is the Election Commission that grants any Political Party the status of being a State or International Political Party.
