The Daily Show – Gun Control & Political Suicide

>>Jon: WELCOME BACK. SO LAST WEEK AS WE WERE WATCH ON THE SHOW, LAST WEEK WE LEARNED THAT WHILE OUR UNITED STATES SENATE WAS UNABLE TO PASS EVEN THE MOST BASIC GUN CONTROL MEASURES, AUSTRALIA HAD A SUCCESSFUL GUN CONTROL FOR ALMOST TWO DECADE, JOHN OLIVER VISITED THERE TO FIND OUT MORE IN PART TWO OF OUR THREE PART SERIES.>>IN 1996 FOLLOWING A MASSACRE, AUSTRALIA’S CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT ENFORCED A NATIONAL BUYBACK OF SEMIAUTOMATIC WEAPONS. WHILE ALSO HEAVILY REGULATING THE PURCHASE AND STORAGE OF OTHER FIREARMS. THE RESULT WAS DRAMATICALLY REDUCED LEVEL OF GUN VIOLENCE. SO WHY CAN’T WE DO THAT HERE? TO FIND OUT I SAT DOWN WITH LONG TIME AID TO HARRY REID JIM MANLY.>>THE NRA IS STILL A VERY POWERFUL FORCE IN THIS COUNTRY. THEY HAVE FOUR MILLION MEMBERS WHO ARE VERY, VERY DETERMINED TO GET THEIR WAY.>>AND HOW CAN A NATION OF 300 MILLION COMPETE WITH THAT?>>IT’S DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND SOMETIME, ISN’T IT BUT THE FACT OF THE MAT CERTIFICATE THAT I’VE GOT TO THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE YOU SUPPORT GUN CONTROL LEGISLATION BECAUSE YOU ARE TAKE ON THE NRA CAN BE POLITICAL SUICIDE.>>AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS WORKING TIRELESSLY TO REDUCE THE RATE OF POLITICAL SUICIDE AMONG ITS MEMBERS. SURELY AUSTRALIAN POLITICIANS WEREN’T STUPID ENOUGH TO END THEIR POLITICAL LIVES FOR GUN CONTROL.>>WELL, I DID.>>WHAT?>>I DID.>>YOU DID WHAT?>>I TOOK THE STAND. I WAS PREPARED TO FACE THE POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES, AND WE DELIVERED GUN CONTROL.>>MEETS ROB BOREBICH FORMER PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA’S MOST CONSERVATIVE STATE. IN 1996 HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN ENACTING GUN CONTROL, KNOWING IT WOULD COST HIM HIS POLITICAL CAREER IN THE NEXT ELECTION.>>WE PAID A HIGH POLITICAL PRICE BUT WE DID THE RIGHT THING. LOOK, THERE ARE AUSTRALIANS ALIVE TODAY BECAUSE WE TOOK THAT ACTION. I MEAN HOW MUCH SAY LIFE WORTH?>>BUT JIM MANLY KNOWS THAT THE TRUE PUBLIC SERVANT HAS NOR IMPORTANT CONCERNS.>>WHAT MAKES A POLITICIAN SUCCESSFUL?>>GETTING RE-ELECTED BY HIS OR HER CONSTITUENTS.>>RIGHT, YEAH. THAT IS HOW YOU JUDGE SUCCESS.>>OKAY, THAT– WELL, GETTING LEGISLATION DONE.>>IS SECOND.>>IS SECOND, YES.>>THAT IS SECOND. HOLLY [BLEEP], THAT IS SECOND?>>IF I COULD REWIND THIS TAPE I WOULD SAY GETTING LEGISLATION DONE AND GETTING RE-ELECTED BY YOUR CONSTITUENTS.>>BUT SERIOUSLY YOU CAN’T REMIND– REWIND THE TAPE LET’S GO WITH THE ANSWER YOU GAVE.>>IF YOU DON’T GET RE-ELECTED, YOU KNOW, YOU JUST ROADKILL IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS AND YOU’RE JUST ANOTHER LOSER.>>TRAGICALLY NOT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THIS.>>WHAT MAKES A POLITICIAN SUCCESSFUL? GO.>>MAKING SOCIETY A BETTER PLACE.>>NO, NO, NO, ROB, NO. LOOK, WE CAN– WE CAN ACTUALLY REWIND THE TAPE. ARE WE ROLLING? WHAT MAKES A POLITICIAN SUCCESSFUL.>>YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GOVERN IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE THAT YOU SERVE.>>LOOK, ROB, I’M GOING OUT ON A LIMB HERE. I ALREADY TOLD SOMEONE ELSE I CAN’T DO THIS WHEN I CAN.>>I HOPE YOU HAVE A LOT OF TAPE.>>TRUE SUCCESS IS A LIFELONG POLITICIAN LIKE HARRY REID WHOSE WATERED DOWN GUN LEGISLATION WAS CAREFULLY DESIGNED TO PROTECT THOSE WHO NEEDED IT MOST.>>HE HAS A RESPONSIBILITY AS THE DEMOCRATIC LEADER TO PROTECT THE CAUCUS.>>THE CAUCUS NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED, THE CAUCUS DOES.>>THEY NEED TO BE PROTECTED POLITICALLY.>>HOW MANY POLITICAL CAREERS HAVE BEEN TRAGICALLY ENDED BY GUN CONTROL.>>WE’VE LOST SOME GOOD FOLKS OVER THE YEARS BECAUSE OF THEIR VIEWS.>>RIGHT. YOU HAVE A PERFECTLY HEALTHY POLITICAL CAREER AND THEN BANG.>>JUST LIKE THAT.>>WHICH MEANS FORMER AUSTRALIA PRIME MINISTER JOHN HOWARD HAS BLOOD ON HIS HANDS.>>DOW EVER THINK ABOUT THE INNOCENT VICTIMS OF YOUR GUN CONTROL.>>THERE WERE NO INNOCENT VICTIMS OF MY– THERE WERE NO VICTIMS AT ALL. THERE IS THE PHOTOGRAPH OF ROB, HE WAS INCREDIBLY COURAGEOUS SUPPORTING OUR LAWS.>>BUT POLITICALLY HE IS DEAD, BANG, JUST LIKE THAT.>>WE LOST AN ELECTION AS WE ALL DO AT SOME POINT.>>BUT HOWARD IS NOT ALONE. HIS DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER TIM FISHER ALSO REFUSES TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THESE CAREER MASSACRES.>>OH, YOU DON’T LOOK AT THESE FACES AND FEEL GUILT?>>WELL, THEY ARE ALIVE. AND –>>THEY’RE DEAD, THEY’RE POLITICALLY DEAD.>>I HOPE THAT THOSE WHO TOTALLY VETO ANY MOVE TO BRING SENSIBLE, SEMI AUCTION AND AUCTION WEAPON CONTROL TO THE SUBURBS OF AMERICA ARE ALSO POLITICALLY DEAD BUT PHYSICALLY ALIVE.>>NOT IN I COULD HELP IT. NEVER AGAIN WILL A POLITICAL CAREER END IN A SENSELESS ACT OF MEANINGFUL LEGISLATION.>>THE VERDICT IS JUST ALL OF THESE, ALL OF THEM ARE DEAD, POLITICALLY NOT PHYSICALLY, PHYSICALLY THEY ARE PROBABLY SAFER.>>IT IS VERY DARK.>>I MEAN AGAIN, JUST TO REITERATE PHYSICALLY THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY FINE BUT IT MAKES YOU THINK.>>UNFORTUNATELY, WHAT SPENDING TIME WITH POLITICALLY DEAD AUSTRALIA POLITICIANS MADE ME THINK ABOUT WAS HOW HORRIBLY WRONG WE HAVE IT IN AMERICA.>>THANKS FOR SPEAK WITH ME ROB.>>PLEASURE.>>ARE YOU A GREAT HUMAN BEING.>>THANK YOU.>>IT’S JUST BY ALL AMERICAN STANDARDS, YOU ARE A [BLEEP] POLITICIAN. AND THE FACT THAT THAT IS TRUE IS WHY I AM NOW GOING TO WALK INTO THE [BLEEP] OCEAN.>>IN AMERICA WE’RE TOLD GUN CONTROL IS NOT POSSIBLE. BUT IN AUSTRALIA, THEY HAVE SHOWN IT IS. PROVIDING A FANTASTIC LESSON FOR AMERICA TO IGNORE. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)>>Jon: JOHN OLVER, WE’LL BE

  1. As an organizer for a local MFOL and having to talk with people who are very anti- gun control, this three part series feels like my current day to day life.

  2. (Australia's murder rate was unaffected by that legislation and only started to decline with international trends a decade after its passage of that legislation)

  3. What's surprising is the fact that America has lived through at least one gun massacre a year since this subject was covered by John Oliver… I just can't figure out why American politicians refuse to shelve their arrogance and learn from another nation which has had marked success with this issue! It's almost pitiable.

  4. Way to go Australia. You did it.
You found a world of safety, almost free of gun violence.

And all you had to do was fuck every law-abiding rifle and pistol shooter out of their weapons, and coerce everybody who didn't want to comply with jail time if they refused.

    Enjoy your nanny state.

  5. Isn't it odd that Americans find it damn near incomprehensible that a political leader might be willing to do the right thing at the expense of their personal careers. I find that incredibly sad. It seems to me that American pols have forget what it means to lead.

  6. so does it actually decrease suicide rate? If it only change the equipment use to suicide,it does not solve the problem

  7. This video sums it up, BUT, in US the manufacturers of guns are too thick skinned to feel anything even if they see this video. as long as money talks, bullcrap walks. hey maybe just maybe, lives of American people individually are worthless to their government. But then why bother saving US prisoners overseas through diplomacy??? seriously

  8. When he said "A fantastic lesson for America to ignore" I choked up. Ugh. I want to walk into the ocean too, Mr. Oliver.

  9. This is disheartening. A politician is a public servant, they should be serving and protect the people who elect them.

  10. Perfect example for the world to ignore. The leader in presidency polls in Brazilian elections, Jair Bolsonaro, defend that we lift the ban from guns in an already divided and violent country. If nothing happens and this man wins, prepare for a civil war in Brasil.

On top of that, the political violence has been escalating. He incite violence and hatred in his speeches and his followers are actively persecuting LGBT, feminists, social activists and leftist intellectuals and politicians. The reports of daily violence are escalating and the opposition is afraid to campaing or even support their candidate in public.

  11. Ever think that people don’t wanna give up their human right so they didn’t vote for the people who were trying to take that away from them?

  12. So a few thousand ppl die from gun violence every year in the states, n that is a tragedy. However, at the same time, millions of lives are saved by guns every year in America. Soooooo would you rather save a few thousand or a million each year?

  13. Plus the rate of violent crime is higher in every place that has gun control, like Chicago for instance lol so you’re not saving lives but putting more and more lives in danger by taking their ability to defend themselves from criminals who won’t turn their guns in

  14. "Thank you for speaking to me Rob. It's just that by american standards, you are a bullshit politician and the fact that that is true is why i am now going to walk into the fucking ocean."

    Exactly what I feel John.

  15. … You know I think there might be a major cultural difference between America and the rest of the world regarding what constitutes a win and the difference between winning and actually accomplishing something.

  16. This kind of thinking is why republicans got 2 supreme court seats and filled over 50 vacancies on the lower courts. The problem was that too many voters, of the white middle-class variety, were indifferent to gun issues until a disturbed young man walked into a rich school with an m4 copy and blew away a bunch of rich kids right after a disturbed misanthrope shot over 500 people at a concert in Las Vegas. Just like you can take a horse to water but you can't make them drink, you can inform the voters of the pressing issue of gun control but you can't make them care or vote on the matter the way the gun nuts do.

  17. “Never again will a political career end in a senseless act of meaningful legislation.” John Oliver ladies and gentlemen.

  18. So what about Brazil where gun violence is much much higher than the us and citizens can't own guns. Criminals don't follow gun laws

  19. this makes me want to move to Australia …but i can't even stand the heat here in New England, so that's not really an option for me

  20. Are they gonna ban cars when someone gets run over?

Notice how they say the GUN crime rate has gone down. Not the crime rate in general.

People of Australia gave up something very important. Idiots

  21. Australia and the UK should mock the US more often.

They might be the furthest away of our children, but Australia know what's up with that nuanced charm that the north American children lack.

  22. So why a 2ed amendment?, when we have a 4th amendment that outlines property and person rights? To be secure in your personal items, things you rightfully own? Free from searches without cause or reason?!?!?

  23. Oh my god!!! John Oliver was a correspondent on the daily show and now he has his own show and winnimg the Emmy's. Way to go Oliver! This shows that Jon Stewart indeed is a great mentor! And I'm rooting for Trevor Noah too! I root for all comedians! They're making people laugh so they deserve all to be blessed!!!!

  24. Gun control isn't about politics or political suicide, it's about stripping the rights of the citizens to further push the power imbalance between the government and the citizens. Less laws = more freedom. Simple as that.

  25. 1:55 John Oliver looks like he's just seen the most horrifying thing

  26. Look I'm not a gun nut. However, you are comparing Australia, a nation that only has 25 million people give or take…to the United States of America, a nation that has 125 guns( not including black market guns or antique revolvers) for every 58 citizens (also my state New York has about 19 million people. That's one state.) I'm sorry, this is just a really terrible comparison. The logistics are in no way similar. Fact is, when you pass a law regarding health and safety, you have to be able to enforce it. And the biggest problem with this argument. Australians wanted to give up their guns. Americans don't.

  27. 6 years later, and sadly it's still the same thing, with no gun legislation ever being done. And thousands of people dead because of lack of political courage and standing against the NRA.

  28. Propaganda and leaving out a lot of facts because they dont fit your narrative but i mean they are basically the same as CNN so not suprised

  29. I'm going to add this to my list of "Reasons why ALL members of Government must only sit the same term time length the President does and ALL p[oitical donations are capped at $10,000 and MUST be declared"

  30. Honestly the next step Australian should do ban the very bad series of movies. They make you do suicide or almost lol

  31. Funny how 6 years later a different host is discussing the same issues and this will probably continue with the next host as well

  32. "Why can't we do what Australia did."
We have like 5 times as many guns per capita. Like 12 times as many semi-automatics per capita. It'd be a much much more odious task.

  33. Just more of a reason to support the NRA, people who say they aren't coming for your guns but then support the mandatory Australian gun buyback program. Idiotic.

  34. The people saying Ollivers wrong about 0mass shootings should go fuck themselves for making me waste my time. Since, not including 1996 there's been none, until 2014,one year after this video. According to Wikipedia because fuck I'm not wasting more time. One is listed as such but 3people died there, not 4as, according to Wikipedia also, is the FBI s definition. Another one has 3victims and the shooter died or killed themselves. So. 2cases of which one kinda sorta baaaarely qualifies. That is not much compared to the USA. What is true is that you should not only look at gun murder but see how people compensate though. Then again, the felt threat, which matters for quality of life, of being burned or killed with a knife is less than with a gun. Ain't easy killing 15 people in under a minute with anything but a gun, anytime, anywhere. Can't outrun it, can barely hide.
